Doyon Early Act Team at the Ipswich Dinnerbell

On Monday, February 22nd, twenty-seven students and two teacher mentors from the Doyon Early Act Team volunteered at the Ipswich Dinnerbell.  As you may know, our Early Act Team is a group of 4th and 5th graders who, in partnership with the Ipswich Rotary Club, work on community service projects.  Each year the Early Act Team members choose local, national and global community service projects. This year they wanted to volunteer at the Dinnerbell!  The Ipswich Dinnerbell is a wonderful organization  of Ipswich churches and other community groups that provides community meals to the greater Ipswich area.

Our students were very efficient as they set up the tables in the Masonic Hall to get ready for diners. They took initiative and were enthusiastic as they swarmed over the hall and finished in record time!  Once diners started to arrive, the students greeted them, served them, and enjoyed conversations with them about school and the Early Act Team.  We are so proud of the way our students represented our school.  They received many compliments from the diners, some saying it was the most enjoyable Dinnerbell meal they had ever had!

When dinner was done, our students cleared tables and straightened up the hall.  The evening was so successful we are planning on making it an annual Early Act Team project.  Thank you to the Early Act Team members who participated, the parents who volunteered to help chaperone and Steve Roge our Ipswich Rotary Club mentor who joined us.

D.A.R.E. at Doyon

Sgt. Kmiec and Ptl. Woodworth of the Ipswich Police Department are working with our 1st and 3rd Grade teachers to start a new D.A.R.E. program at Doyon this year. Although D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, the new “Keepin’ it Real” elementary program focuses on making good decisions. This new program includes interactive lessons that present stories meant to help kids make smart decisions about being honest, safe and responsible in different situations. For example, a recent 1st grade lesson (see video below) taught our students about being aware of things and people around them when they are outside and making smart decisions. Another 1st grade lesson was about making smart decisions during an emergency including how to call 911. In addition to the actual D.A.R.E. lessons, Sgt. Kmiec and Ptl. Woodworth want to build relationships with our students so they feel comfortable approaching them in or out of school. On lesson days, Sgt. Kmiec and Ptl. Woodworth go to
